In time for the 20th anniversary of its existence, a massive compilation of The Kiss That Took A Trip's most remarkable work and a testimony of how much an artist can evolve through its career, "Thirty In Twenty: The Collection" successes in showcasing The Kiss' many sides, hopping awkwardly from subgenre to subgenre, but always within a mostly alternative framework. Again, the almost miraculous balance between experimentalism and mainstream appeal is displayed here in ways that are hard to deny.

But "Thirty In Twenty" is not just a collection of past work. The Kiss That Took A Trip takes this opportunity to slide in new material that would be a difficult fit on a regular release, toying with vibes of unlikely association to the artist: "We are what we protect", the pivotal track of the anniversary, is an adult pop piano ballad that is part Richard Marx part Elton John; lead single "Forevermore" is a straight dance song, much more luminous than previous flirtations with the genre ("Gordian knot", "Tastes like copper", "Meat ain't murder"); "Mimosa" alternates sarcastic upbeat (borderline tropical) melodies with a gloomy and anticlimatic midtempo chorus. The surprises don't end there: this double album features reworkings of "Vanilla killer" and "Three girls", that have been redesigned in their structures as well as infused with vocals.

The other 25 tracks are well known pieces. We can find 2 remixes ("Amplification of the senses" and "Stock footage") and 23 remasters. Among them, representatives of the more instrumental and postrock-ish beginnings ("Flower of gas and smoke", "Champions of delay", "Fangs", "Bad heavens"), dark electronic ballads ("Blue is the flame", "The truth about Lucifer"), ambient ("Happy birthday party monster"), stripped songs imbued with an acoustic spirit ("Crapola", "3 year flu", "Delirious romance"), industrially tingled electronica ("Sound and immaculate", "Everything is disappointing”), shoegazer pop ("Copernicus"), pop-rock anthems ("Skull and crossbones", "The dailies", "Heartbreak leave", "Irma Vep"), even jazz rock ("Comedian mum"), and the fan favourite "Goodbye horses" cover.

This double CD is the mandatory starting point for a subsequent deeper dive in The Kiss That Took A Trip's discography.
